My name is Jake Heggie, and I'm delighted to share some concerts we performed recently in one of the most spectacular settings in America. Today's program features music by Barber, Copland, Maria Newman, and Tessa Lark. -"Classical Tahoe" is a magical combination of wonderful music and fantastic people in a ridiculously beautiful location. -Since the first time here, like, I fell in love with the space, obviously, with its people, and with the whole mood of the festival, which is really relaxed but also very serious in the music-making. -There's a lot of camaraderie between the musicians. It's a good combination of high-level music-making and enjoyment of the outdoors. -I have had the most wonderful time. The entirety of Lake Tahoe, both in Nevada and in California, the surrounding mountains, this ocean in the mountains. It's just unbelievable. -What we're trying to do is keep our intimate experience, but be able to broadcast it so that people can have a front-row seat to both this beautiful place and this kind of quality musical experience. -The pavilion is all lit up like a fairy land. -It's magical. It's -- It's one of a kind. -It's like a block party. Everybody knows each other in the audience. And over the course of time, they've gotten to know us. -After every performance, somebody always comes to me and introduces themselves. -They're so personal and enthusiastic. -We've made this community together, so that makes it like family here. ♪♪♪ -Barber "Violin Concerto" -- what an incredible piece of music. It's so colorful and emotional and -- and passionate. And Tessa Lark is our soloist. She has been fantastic to work with, and we've been having so much fun. -The fact that she can do the classical and the bluegrass -- she's really a force. -Barber's "Violin Concerto" is one that I've adored ever since I first heard it. I was a wee one, uh, listening to the radio in Kentucky. I was about 9 or 10 years old. It's really fun to play. I think soloists and orchestra alike really enjoy this piece, and there's a lot to sink your teeth in -- um, on the last movement in particular. it's a short but compact, um, moto perpetuo movement, and I feel like it's really such a perfect little concerto. It's only 22 minutes long, but it's still one of the greats, and I think it will forever stand the test of time for its beauty. ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ [ Cheers and applause ] -The encore I played was my own "Appalachian Fantasy." When I was here last year, I performed Tchaikovsky "Concerto" and then kicked my shoes off, literally, and played a fiddle encore. So at the end of the Barber "Concerto" this year, I even heard some audience members in the front row saying, "Take your shoes off, girl!" So I felt like I had to play some sort of fiddle music. I mean, it's not so far off from the last movement of the Barber. Of course, harmonically, structurally, it's nothing like fiddle music, but the fact of showing off virtuosity and that moto perpetuo sort of trance-like feeling reminds me a lot of fiddle music. So it's always fun to bring my Kentucky roots to a concert stage. ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ [ Cheers and applause ] -We're also performing Copland's "Old American Songs" with Lucas Meachem. Lucas is such a great singer and such a wonderful personality that he just brings out across the character of all of those songs so well. And also, you know, like, there's the fun of them because not all of them are totally serious. A lot of the tunes I think people recognize because they are -- of course, they're not original songs that Copland came up with, but he researched old songs in the American literature already and orchestrated them really beautifully. It is a contrasting work with a slow, fast, slow, fast between movements. I have loved writing for the magnificence of the brass, for the silken sound versus the fierce, magnificent, soul-splitting sound that these incredible players can bring out of their instruments. -It's a very, very quirky piece. It's very playful, especially the second and the fourth movement. I think there are lots of different characters throughout the piece. There are lots of different colors. My personal sort of preference for this type of setting is the really strong brass bands that we have in Serbia, which is where I grew up. So any time there's a chance to work with brass ensemble, I-I just think it's one of the best things that can happen in the world. ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ -Funding for this program has been provided by... the FS Foundation... ♪♪♪ ...Reno Tahoe... ♪♪♪ ...the University of Nevada, Reno at Lake Tahoe...
