His friend Jeff is out of town and Bill is sick. He doesn't know who he's going to play with or what he's going to do. ♪ ♪ Well, it's a Saturday morning, and you're thinking ♪ ♪ that it's going to be boring the whole day through ♪ ♪ ♪ your friends, are not around. ♪ ♪ And it looks like you won't find anything fun to do. ♪ ♪ But it's a beautiful day. ♪ ♪ No need to feel that way. ♪ ♪ Yes. Go on, lazy head. Why don't you jump out of bed. ♪ ♪ If you open your eyes, you'll find something to do. ♪ ♪ Or something that'll be just right for you. ♪ ♪ ♪ ♪ Tommy> No. (music fades) Jack, leave my shoes alone. You're a bad dog. It's a good thing I know how to lace my shoes, or else you'd be in trouble. Keith> What are you doing, slowpoke? Breakfast is almost ready. Oh, you better do something about that bed, too. That's not the way mom makes up a bed. >> Well, mom is bigger, so she ought to be able to make a bed better than I can. Mom> Good morning, Keith, it's about time you got here. Breakfast is about ready. How about you pour the milk. Keith> All right. Tommy> Good morning, mom. Mom> Well, good morning, Tommy. How about if you help set the table. Would you? Narrator> If everyone helps, then breakfast can be fixed quickly. Everybody can do what they can do best. Sometimes Tommy cannot do the same kind of things that his father can do, but he can still help in his own way. Keith> Looks good. Mom> It sure does. Tommy> I'm going to eat it fast. Keith> Joe and I are going to the park this morning to play some basketball. My shooting has been a little off. I need to make it to practice. Tommy> Can I play with you? Jeff is out of town and Bill is sick. I don't have anything to do today. Keith> You can't play basketball, Tommy. Tommy> Yes, I can. I know how to play basketball. Tommy> I didn't mean you don't know how to play basketball. I meant you were too little. When you get a little taller, you can play. Not now. Dad> Now, boys. when you come back from practice this afternoon, I want you to help me. I have to wash the windows. Tommy> I'll help you, daddy. Dad> Well, we'll see, Tommy. We'll see. Mom> One thing you can do, Tommy, is to wash the dog. Tommy> Oh, no. Mom> Oh, yes. Jack's your dog, remember? You said you'd take care of him. He's your responsibility. Keith> Looks like you had something to do after all. It'll take you all morning just to catch Jack, once he finds out about that bath. (laughing) Keith> Looking good, looking good. Tommy> Here you are. I've been looking all over for you. Can I play basketball with you? Can I fellas? I know how. Player #1> Sure you do, kid. You're too short to play basketball. Player #2> Hey, we could get him some stilts. (laughing) Player #3> Hey, Keith. Come on, man, let's go. Keith> I see it. I see it. Let's go! Oh, go away and let us practice. Tommy> No, I want to play. Keith> Okay, okay. You can play. Can't he fellas? Players> Okay. Player #2> Right. Yeah. Come on, Player #1> Take it Tommy. Player #2> Give me some. Oh! (Tommy pants loudly) Player #3> Let's see it, Tom. (Boys laugh) Keith> All right, Randy. Player #2> Go, Randy. Yes. Wait a minute... Keith> See Tommy, you're too little to play basketball. Go find someone your own age to play with, okay. Go on. Player> 10 - 4. Yeah. Player #3> You're too short to play basketball. Tommy> Just wait. One of these days I'll be big enough to play basketball. Narrator> Can you do the same kinds of things that your older brother can do? Tommy can't play basketball as well as Keith and his friends can, because they're taller than he is. When Tommy gets taller, he may be able to play basketball as well as Keith can, or maybe even better. You might not ever want to play basketball. You might want to do something else. (kids cheering) Tommy> Hey, can I play? I know how to play kickball. Player> Okay, we need another player on our team. You'll kick next. Tommy> Okay. Keith and his friends thought that Tommy was too little to play basketball with them, but he's not too little to play kickball with his own friends. With boys and girls his own age, Tommy acts differently than he does with his family. At home, he's the youngest son and Keith's little brother. But here, Tommy's just another guy. Tommy> Daddy, Daddy. I've been playing kickball. We won and I hit a home run. Dad> You did? Hey. That's great. Tommy. Tommy> Can I help wash windows? Dad> Well, do you think you know how to wash windows? Tommy> Yes, I'm sure I can. Dad> Okay. I guess you can help if you promise to be careful. Now, go get the hose. Okay? Tommy> Hi momma. Mom> What? Tommy. (wind blowing) Tommy> I'll rinse the windows. Dad> No. I'll do that. Now, you go turn the water off and I'll tell you when to turn the hose on. Okay? Tommy> Yes, sir. Dad> Okay. Dad> Okay. Turn it off. Mom> Oh, here you are, Tom. Have you forgotten all about Jack's bath? Tommy> Oh, mom. Mom> Oh, mom, nothing! Go wash the dog. I put the soap in the tub in the backyard for you. Tommy> Here Jack. (whistles) Here Jack. (whistles) Here Jack. (whistles) (silence) Oh. Oh. Oh. (grunting) (grunting continues) Keith> Hey, Tommy. Would you like some help? Dad's just about finished, and I thought you could use some help. Tommy> Sure. Keith> Hey, I'm sorry about today. I just wanted to play basketball with my friends Tommy> It's okay. I played kickball with my friends. Narrator> Everybody is important in some way. You are a special person. It doesn't matter what you can do or what you can't do. You can do something better than someone else can, because there was nobody else exactly... like you. ♪ ♪ Well, let's take a look around. ♪ ♪ and find something to do. ♪ ♪ Something that's going to be fun. ♪ ♪ Sometimes my have to look real hard, ♪ ♪ because you can't just play with anyone. ♪ ♪ You've got to be tall to play basketball. ♪ ♪ And if you can't play because they you say you're ♪ ♪ too small, well, don't ♪ ♪ you worry about the things that you can't do. ♪ ♪ Some things just aren't meant for you. ♪ ♪ ♪ The older kids are playing their older games ♪ ♪ and they're having their own kind of fun. ♪ ♪ But there are so many other good things for you to do, ♪ ♪ and they're just waiting to be done. ♪ ♪ Your older brother's playing at something new, ♪ ♪ and when you get older, you can play along too. ♪ ♪ There are other games to play, other friends to find. ♪ ♪ And if you don't hurry, you'll get left behind. ♪ ♪ ♪ Your friends right around the corner ♪ ♪ having a good time, ♪ ♪ and they're just waiting for you to show up. ♪ ♪ And the kind of good times you like to have are going ♪ ♪ to change as you grow up. ♪ ♪ ♪ For some things, you might ♪ ♪ have to wait a little longer ♪ ♪ while you're waiting to be older, stronger. ♪ ♪ Don't forget about the fun that you can have today. ♪ ♪ Tell me, how can you run out of games to play? ♪ ♪ ♪ You should know that you're important ♪ ♪ for all the good things that you already know how to do. ♪ ♪ ♪ And I'll bet if we try to make lists of them all, ♪ ♪ we never would get through. ♪ ♪ So look at all the fun that you can have, my friend. ♪ ♪ I've said it before, and I'll say it again. ♪ ♪ You're special for the things that you can do. ♪ ♪ You're special.
