WEBVTT 00:01.200 --> 00:02.933 align:left position:20% line:83% size:70% AMNA NAWAZ: Welcome to the "News Hour." 00:02.933 --> 00:06.100 align:left position:20% line:77% size:70% The contenders for this November's presidential race are officially set. 00:06.100 --> 00:09.266 align:left position:20% line:77% size:70% GEOFF BENNETT: Minnesota Governor Tim Walz is joining Democratic presidential 00:09.266 --> 00:13.200 align:left position:20% line:77% size:70% nominee Kamala Harris as her running mate this November. And he's joining 00:13.200 --> 00:16.900 align:left position:20% line:83% size:70% her on stage tonight at a rally in Philadelphia. 00:16.900 --> 00:21.900 align:left position:10% line:77% size:80% AMNA NAWAZ: Walz is a familiar face in Minnesota and the halls of power in Washington, D.C., 00:23.133 --> 00:25.500 align:left position:20% line:83% size:70% but a relative newcomer to the national stage. 00:28.800 --> 00:30.900 align:left position:20% line:83% size:70% Along a white picket fence in St. Paul, 00:30.900 --> 00:35.900 align:left position:20% line:77% size:70% Minnesota today, a crowd gathers to send off Governor Tim Walz after getting the 00:38.166 --> 00:42.766 align:left position:20% line:77% size:70% call from presidential nominee Kamala Harris to join the Democratic ticket. 00:42.766 --> 00:43.766 align:left position:10% line:77% size:80% KAMALA HARRIS, Vice President of the United States (D) and U.S. Presidential Candidate: Listen, 00:43.766 --> 00:46.133 align:left position:10% line:89% size:80% I want you to do this with me. 00:46.133 --> 00:48.633 align:left position:10% line:71% size:80% GOV. TIM WALZ (D-MN), Vice Presidential Candidate: I would be honored, Madam Vice President. 00:48.633 --> 00:52.066 align:left position:20% line:71% size:70% AMNA NAWAZ: The duo is up against the Republican ticket of former President Donald Trump and Ohio 00:52.066 --> 00:57.033 align:left position:20% line:71% size:70% Senator J.D. Vance, who went after his newly named counterpart at a Philadelphia rally today. 00:59.166 --> 01:01.433 align:left position:10% line:77% size:80% SEN. J.D. VANCE (R-OH), Vice Presidential Candidate: Tim Walz's record is a joke. He's 01:01.433 --> 01:06.033 align:left position:10% line:77% size:80% been one of the most far left radicals in the entire United States government at any level. 01:06.900 --> 01:08.933 align:left position:30% line:83% size:60% (CHEERING) (APPLAUSE) 01:08.933 --> 01:10.833 align:left position:10% line:77% size:80% SEN. J.D. VANCE: The reason I didn't say a whole lot about Tim Walz is because the 01:10.833 --> 01:12.766 align:left position:20% line:77% size:70% Democrats have showed a willingness to pull a little switcheroo on us. So I 01:12.766 --> 01:15.933 align:left position:20% line:77% size:70% don't even know if we're actually going to get Tim Walz out of this campaign. 01:15.933 --> 01:19.833 align:left position:20% line:77% size:70% AMNA NAWAZ: Walz, a 60-year-old father of two, is currently in his second term 01:19.833 --> 01:24.466 align:left position:10% line:77% size:80% as Minnesota governor, with a 54 percent state approval rating in a July Morning 01:24.466 --> 01:29.466 align:left position:20% line:77% size:70% Consult survey and a reputation for a relatable, some say, folksy approach. 01:31.333 --> 01:33.333 align:left position:10% line:77% size:80% HOPE WALZ, Daughter of Tim Walz: I think we're going to go do the slingshot. 01:33.333 --> 01:35.333 align:left position:20% line:77% size:70% GOV. TIM WALZ: Which I don't know what it is, and they're keeping it from me. 01:35.333 --> 01:37.633 align:left position:10% line:77% size:80% AMNA NAWAZ: And though he's racked up a substantial political record over nearly 01:37.633 --> 01:42.633 align:left position:10% line:77% size:80% two decades in public office, Walz hasn't been very well-known outside his home state. 01:43.500 --> 01:44.466 align:left position:10% line:89% size:80% HOPE WALZ: Good job, dad. 01:44.466 --> 01:45.800 align:left position:10% line:89% size:80% GOV. TIM WALZ: Oh, thanks, Hope. 01:45.800 --> 01:47.566 align:left position:20% line:83% size:70% AMNA NAWAZ: In 2020, that began to change. 01:47.566 --> 01:50.033 align:left position:10% line:83% size:80% GOV. TIM WALZ: Generations of pain is manifesting itself in 01:50.033 --> 01:54.366 align:left position:20% line:83% size:70% front of the world. And the world is watching. 01:54.366 --> 01:57.833 align:left position:10% line:77% size:80% AMNA NAWAZ: After a police officer murdered George Floyd in Minneapolis, 01:57.833 --> 02:00.733 align:left position:20% line:83% size:70% Walz condemned the killing, and, days later, 02:00.733 --> 02:05.700 align:left position:10% line:77% size:80% after some protests turned violent, called in the National Guard to respond to rioters. 02:07.833 --> 02:10.166 align:left position:10% line:77% size:80% GOV. TIM WALZ: Everything that we believe in, these people are trying to destroy. So, if 02:10.166 --> 02:15.066 align:left position:20% line:71% size:70% you are on the streets tonight, it is very clear, you are not with us. You do not share our values. 02:17.233 --> 02:20.433 align:left position:20% line:71% size:70% And we will use the full strength of goodness and righteousness to make sure that this ends. 02:22.233 --> 02:24.866 align:left position:20% line:77% size:70% AMNA NAWAZ: The right criticized his response as slow, and Walz himself 02:24.866 --> 02:28.700 align:left position:20% line:77% size:70% later acknowledged the -- quote -- "abject failure" of that response. 02:28.700 --> 02:33.700 align:left position:10% line:77% size:80% In 2023, after his party won control of the Minnesota House and Senate, Walz signed into 02:35.800 --> 02:39.133 align:left position:10% line:77% size:80% law a laundry list of Democratic priorities, providing free meals to K-12 students, the largest 02:41.133 --> 02:45.500 align:left position:10% line:77% size:80% child tax credit in the country, enshrining abortion rights into state law, increasing 02:47.533 --> 02:50.600 align:left position:10% line:77% size:80% LGBTQ protections, legalizing marijuana, and granting voting rights to ex-offenders. 02:52.633 --> 02:56.900 align:left position:10% line:77% size:80% His selection by Harris is seen by some as a nod to the party's progressive wing. 02:56.900 --> 02:59.500 align:left position:10% line:77% size:80% JAKE TAPPER, CNN Host: Do you think your record is an asset to the ticket, 02:59.500 --> 03:04.466 align:left position:20% line:77% size:70% or would it risk fueling Trump's attacks as you being a big government liberal? 03:06.400 --> 03:08.500 align:left position:10% line:77% size:80% GOV. TIM WALZ: What a monster. Kids are eating -- eating and having full bellies 03:08.500 --> 03:11.866 align:left position:10% line:77% size:80% so they can go learn. And women are making their own health care decisions. And we're 03:11.866 --> 03:16.866 align:left position:10% line:77% size:80% a top five business state and we also rank in the top three of happiness. 03:18.900 --> 03:21.300 align:left position:10% line:77% size:80% AMNA NAWAZ: But earlier in his career on Capitol Hill, he was known as a moderate. 03:21.300 --> 03:24.733 align:left position:10% line:77% size:80% GOV. TIM WALZ: I intend to come here to Washington to provide authentic leadership. 03:24.733 --> 03:29.733 align:left position:10% line:77% size:80% AMNA NAWAZ: In 2006, he flipped his Minnesota U.S. House seat from red to blue, becoming the 03:31.033 --> 03:33.533 align:left position:20% line:83% size:70% highest-ranking enlisted veteran ever in Congress. 03:33.533 --> 03:38.533 align:left position:10% line:77% size:80% Over six terms and a dozen years, he ranked among the most bipartisan lawmakers, 03:40.433 --> 03:43.500 align:left position:10% line:77% size:80% supported ongoing operations in Iraq, while opposing more boots on the ground, 03:43.500 --> 03:48.100 align:left position:10% line:77% size:80% pushed for a minimum wage hike and prescription drug cost negotiations, 03:48.100 --> 03:53.100 align:left position:20% line:71% size:70% voted against President Obama's 2009 Wall Street bailout plan, but backed the Affordable Care Act. 03:55.466 --> 04:00.100 align:left position:10% line:71% size:80% Before entering politics, Walz served 24 years with the Army National Guard, enlisting at the age 04:02.366 --> 04:05.633 align:left position:20% line:71% size:70% of 17, alongside his day job teaching high school social studies and coaching football. In recent 04:07.966 --> 04:12.500 align:left position:20% line:71% size:70% weeks leading up to his selection, Walz made a name for himself as a willing warrior for Harris. 04:14.166 --> 04:17.933 align:left position:20% line:77% size:70% Are you what this ticket needs to be able to beat the Trump/Vance ticket? 04:17.933 --> 04:20.600 align:left position:20% line:77% size:70% GOV. TIM WALZ: Well, I don't know about that, Amna. What I can tell you is, 04:20.600 --> 04:25.600 align:left position:20% line:77% size:70% is that we will beat that ticket. This chaos that Donald Trump brings, 04:25.600 --> 04:30.600 align:left position:20% line:77% size:70% this dystopian view of America, Kamala Harris' joy, you can feel it. 04:32.266 --> 04:34.500 align:left position:20% line:77% size:70% AMNA NAWAZ: Going viral by branding the opposing ticket in this way. 04:34.500 --> 04:36.600 align:left position:10% line:83% size:80% GOV. TIM WALZ: Well, it's true. These guys are just weird. 04:36.600 --> 04:40.100 align:left position:10% line:77% size:80% AMNA NAWAZ: The Harris/Walz campaign will spend the next week touring swing states, 04:40.100 --> 04:45.100 align:left position:10% line:71% size:80% with stops in Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Michigan, North Carolina, Arizona, and Nevada, as it 04:47.200 --> 04:51.333 align:left position:10% line:77% size:80% introduces the country to a new national political player and potential future vice president. 04:53.233 --> 04:56.700 align:left position:20% line:77% size:70% One of the biggest challenges for the Harris/Walz campaign will be 04:56.700 --> 04:59.800 align:left position:10% line:83% size:80% introducing Governor Walz to the American people. 04:59.800 --> 05:04.800 align:left position:10% line:77% size:80% Our new PBS/NPR/Marist poll out today shows that 71 percent of Americans don't know who he is. 05:06.700 --> 05:10.800 align:left position:10% line:77% size:80% For more on the Minnesota governor, I'm joined now by Twin Cities PBS reporter 05:10.800 --> 05:15.100 align:left position:20% line:77% size:70% Mary Lahammer. She's been following Walz's career for some 20 years. 05:15.100 --> 05:17.000 align:left position:20% line:83% size:70% Mary, good to see you. Thanks for joining us. 05:17.000 --> 05:18.733 align:left position:20% line:83% size:70% MARY LAHAMMER, Twin Cities PBS: Thank you. 05:18.733 --> 05:21.133 align:left position:20% line:77% size:70% AMNA NAWAZ: So you were outside his home earlier today as the news broke. 05:21.133 --> 05:24.200 align:left position:10% line:83% size:80% Tell me a little bit about what you heard from people out there. 05:24.200 --> 05:26.533 align:left position:10% line:83% size:80% MARY LAHAMMER: Yes, it was an interesting environment. 05:26.533 --> 05:30.866 align:left position:10% line:71% size:80% An organic crowd developed. There were folks walking their dogs out on a morning run, a walk, 05:32.666 --> 05:35.833 align:left position:20% line:77% size:70% and decided to stay, and they actually got to see him depart in the motorcade, 05:35.833 --> 05:38.600 align:left position:10% line:83% size:80% and just started cheering for him out of the blue. 05:38.600 --> 05:43.266 align:left position:20% line:71% size:70% And then talking to them afterwards, they're excited. Minnesotans like to play an outsized 05:43.266 --> 05:47.733 align:left position:10% line:71% size:80% role in national politics. They're kind of proud of it. I think people are learning the statistic 05:47.733 --> 05:52.733 align:left position:20% line:71% size:70% that if Walz wins three out of the last six Democratic vice presidents will be from Minnesota. 05:54.466 --> 05:57.266 align:left position:20% line:77% size:70% But as your poll shows, he's got to introduce himself to the nation. 05:57.266 --> 06:00.266 align:left position:20% line:77% size:70% AMNA NAWAZ: He does have an uphill battle there. The vast majority of 06:00.266 --> 06:02.866 align:left position:20% line:77% size:70% Americans don't know who he is or don't know what to think of him. 06:02.866 --> 06:05.433 align:left position:20% line:83% size:70% So the campaign, as we know, is already working to 06:05.433 --> 06:08.833 align:left position:10% line:83% size:80% set that narrative with videos like this they released today. 06:08.833 --> 06:12.233 align:left position:20% line:77% size:70% GOV. TIM WALZ: I coached football and taught social studies for 20 years. And 06:12.233 --> 06:16.800 align:left position:10% line:77% size:80% I tried to teach my students what small-town Nebraska taught me, respect, compromise, 06:16.800 --> 06:21.200 align:left position:10% line:77% size:80% service to country. And so when I went into government, that's what I carried with me. 06:21.200 --> 06:23.900 align:left position:10% line:83% size:80% AMNA NAWAZ: So, Mary, you have covered him for some 20 years. 06:23.900 --> 06:28.200 align:left position:20% line:77% size:70% What's the headline here for what people need to know about who is Tim Walz? 06:28.200 --> 06:30.500 align:left position:20% line:77% size:70% MARY LAHAMMER: Yes, I will go back to his very first run for office. 06:30.500 --> 06:35.500 align:left position:10% line:77% size:80% And I remember some trusted sources saying you got to get down to this rural Republican 06:37.566 --> 06:40.533 align:left position:10% line:77% size:80% district where this football coach is actually making a race of it and eventually flipped the 06:40.533 --> 06:45.133 align:left position:10% line:77% size:80% seat. I went back and studied that debate and tried to kind of ascertain how much he 06:45.133 --> 06:48.866 align:left position:20% line:77% size:70% has changed. And it was interesting to me to see that he is still kind 06:48.866 --> 06:53.866 align:left position:20% line:77% size:70% of -- was the fearless, self-effacing, but aggressive, quick kind of his feet. 06:55.366 --> 06:58.600 align:left position:10% line:83% size:80% So he's been able to debate and really pivot for a long time, 06:58.600 --> 07:03.000 align:left position:10% line:77% size:80% but introducing himself to a national audience will be new. He's used to the Minnesota press 07:03.000 --> 07:07.266 align:left position:20% line:71% size:70% corps. He's done a lot of national news, and was even surprised. In our recent interview, 07:07.266 --> 07:11.633 align:left position:20% line:71% size:70% we discussed how that Republicans are weird phrase, how we kind of coined that phrase. 07:11.633 --> 07:15.866 align:left position:20% line:71% size:70% And he was almost embarrassed, saying, oh, gosh, shucks. I wasn't trying to be mean about it. 07:15.866 --> 07:20.866 align:left position:20% line:77% size:70% So we will see how those Midwestern tendencies go on the national stage. 07:22.933 --> 07:25.133 align:left position:10% line:77% size:80% AMNA NAWAZ: So, Mary, some folks are hailing his selection here as a nod to progressives 07:25.133 --> 07:28.700 align:left position:10% line:77% size:80% of the Democratic Party. But I had a Dem source tell me earlier today that he's actually much 07:28.700 --> 07:32.800 align:left position:10% line:77% size:80% more moderate than many in the media make him out to be. What do you make of that? 07:32.800 --> 07:35.300 align:left position:10% line:77% size:80% MARY LAHAMMER: It depends which office you're talking about. When he was a member 07:35.300 --> 07:40.300 align:left position:20% line:77% size:70% of Congress from a rural previously Republican district, he was much more of a moderate. 07:42.366 --> 07:45.666 align:left position:10% line:77% size:80% Then, when he became governor for the state and his lieutenant governor, Peggy Flanagan, 07:45.666 --> 07:50.200 align:left position:10% line:77% size:80% definitely took him in more of a progressive stance. And then he got an all-Democratic 07:50.200 --> 07:55.200 align:left position:20% line:77% size:70% legislature, so ended up passing just a very large list of highly progressive items. 07:56.700 --> 07:58.700 align:left position:10% line:83% size:80% So, some folks say, was it a bait-and-switch? He originally 07:58.700 --> 08:03.400 align:left position:10% line:77% size:80% ran on this concept of one Minnesota. We are still probably rather divided here. 08:03.400 --> 08:05.733 align:left position:20% line:77% size:70% AMNA NAWAZ: Well, he is relatively popular at the state level, 08:05.733 --> 08:10.633 align:left position:10% line:77% size:80% right? He has a 54 percent approval rating in Minnesota. What do his critics there say 08:10.633 --> 08:15.100 align:left position:10% line:77% size:80% about him? And could any of those become vulnerabilities on the national stage? 08:15.100 --> 08:17.466 align:left position:20% line:77% size:70% MARY LAHAMMER: Yes, a good portion of his time in office as governor 08:17.466 --> 08:22.466 align:left position:10% line:77% size:80% has been in front of a divided legislature. He recently had the all-Democratic trifecta. 08:24.200 --> 08:26.733 align:left position:20% line:77% size:70% But before that, he had a lot of critics, and he had a hard road in 08:26.733 --> 08:31.733 align:left position:10% line:77% size:80% divided government. Minnesota is a state, four Democrats, four Republicans in Congress. We're 08:33.733 --> 08:36.300 align:left position:10% line:77% size:80% slightly purple. And folks here are very critical of his time during the pandemic 08:36.300 --> 08:40.666 align:left position:10% line:77% size:80% in particular. We had a lot of lockdowns. Of course, we had the riots following George 08:40.666 --> 08:45.666 align:left position:10% line:77% size:80% Floyd's murder and were very critical of him being slow to send the National Guard out. 08:45.666 --> 08:50.666 align:left position:10% line:77% size:80% Also, during the pandemic, we had the largest fraud in the Feeding Our Future fraud case. I 08:52.666 --> 08:55.000 align:left position:10% line:77% size:80% think the governor will probably be talking about the fact that those cases have been 08:55.000 --> 08:59.433 align:left position:20% line:77% size:70% brought to justice, and there have been convictions in both of those instances. 08:59.433 --> 09:01.100 align:left position:20% line:83% size:70% AMNA NAWAZ: Big week for Minnesota. We 09:01.100 --> 09:03.333 align:left position:10% line:83% size:80% know you will be covering his career moving forward as well. 09:03.333 --> 09:06.866 align:left position:10% line:83% size:80% That is Mary Lahammer of Twin Cities PBS joining us tonight. 09:06.866 --> 09:08.566 align:left position:30% line:83% size:60% Mary, thank you. Good to see you. 09:08.566 --> 09:09.300 align:left position:10% line:89% size:80% MARY LAHAMMER: Thank you.
