Violence is whats dominated our for the 37 years that I've been alive. I grew up in the 1980s and 90s. If you were black and you were outside, you can be taken to jail for any simple thing. We've been doing this all my life, but violence is still here. We have to police better. We have to change things for ourselves because no one's going to do it for us. The youngest mayor in the city's history trying to restore trust in government. You cannot go anywhere in Baltimore without seeing the aftermath of gun violence. We've seen other strategies that are rooted in penalty. We are going to be reimagining public safety in Baltimore. We take guys who used to be shooters and killers, and they're now interceding in the violence. We the peacemakers. Many of us have been to prison, but now we work to diffuse violence in our community. Governor today insisted the city's cure will not work. Trying to reduce crime by defunding police is dangerous, radical, far left lunacy. You campaigned on trying to clean up the streets. What do you want to say about this past weekend? Can you handle this crime situation right now? The blood of 300 will be on your hands, Mr. Mayor. If the forces come to get me in four years, so be it. But I know when I'm done, I'll be able to say that I never compromise myself with my city. All right, all right. This is about building systems so that young boys and girls don't have to live through what I live through. We want murder to understand it cannot have the last say just because you showed up. Love is showing up behind. 50 years from now or however long it takes. People will know we must have been doing a lot of good work in order for it to get that way.
